Drainage, Grading & Excavation in Mantua, OH

A lot of landscape problems here start as water problems. Standing water, a soggy yard, a wet foundation, a slope washing out. We regrade, drain and fix the cause, and I like running the machines that do it.

“Marcus and his team did a great job replacing a walkway in our backyard along with installing a patio for a fire pit.…”

Drainage and excavation work we have done

Dry creek bed of river rock with flat stepping stones through it beside planted beds
Geotextile fabric rolled out over a fresh excavation with a track loader parked on it
Boulder outcropping retaining a mulched slope with a river rock swale running below it

Every photo is our own work. More finished projects.

What drainage work looks like

Sometimes it is regrading so water finally runs away from the house. Sometimes it is buried drain lines and a dry creek bed of river rock that carries storm water and looks like a landscape feature. One client came to us with a backyard neglected for thirty years and water pooling against the house. We fixed the drainage first, then designed the landscape on top of it.

Excavation and site work

Machine work is part of nearly every build we do, and we take on excavation and grading as its own job too: cutting grades for walls, site prep, culvert work, leveling and seeding. One project ran culvert piping with a land bridge over a creek, then graded and seeded the entire backyard behind it.

Which fix fits which problem

Water against the foundation usually means the grade is tipped the wrong way, and the fix is regrading so the first stretch of yard falls away from the house. A lawn that stays soggy for days after rain is a clay problem, so buried drain lines or a dry creek bed give the water somewhere to go. A slope that washes out every spring wants structure, a wall or outcropping stone with plantings to knit it together. The site visit sorts out which one you are looking at, because treating the wrong one does not move the water.

This service is right when

  • Water stands in the yard or runs toward the house
  • A slope is washing out or cannot be mowed
  • You are building anyway, and the water problem should be fixed under the project, not after it

When it is the wrong call

  • Water is coming through the basement wall itself. That is a waterproofing contractor, and the outside grading we do is often step one
  • You need a pond dug for livestock. Wrong kind of dig

How we take a yard from wet to dry

We fix water problems in this order:

  • Find where the water comes from and where it wants to go
  • Regrade so the surface sends it away from the house
  • Bury drain lines where the surface alone cannot carry it
  • Build the visible runs as dry creek beds that read as landscaping
  • Final grade and seed behind the work, so the finished yard is lawn again

Where we build it

Most of this work lands in Garrettsville drainage, Mantua, Aurora, Streetsboro and the rest of the towns on the service area page, all inside the circle we keep around our Mantua yard.

What you get on every project

  • Every project is warrantiedThe structure carries a structural warranty, because we stand behind all of our work.
  • Lawn repair warrantied six monthsOur machines can tear up grass during construction. We repair the lawn to its original condition, and the lawn repair is warrantied for six months.
  • Permits and HOA approvals handledWe work with the city, the township and the engineers, sit in the meetings, and present the 3D drawing with locations and setbacks to the HOA board. You do not chase any of it.
  • The price you approve is the priceYou see preliminary pricing with the design and final pricing before anything is ordered. Nothing starts until we have a plan and budget that you are comfortable with.

Drainage questions, answered

Can you fix standing water in my yard?

Usually, yes. The fix depends on the cause: regrading, buried drains, a dry creek, or all three. We diagnose it on a site visit and fix the water before we plant or build anything on top of it.

What is a dry creek bed and does it work?

It is a graded channel of river rock and boulders that carries storm water when it rains and reads as a landscape feature when it does not. Built with the right grade and fabric under it, it works, and it looks better than a plastic pipe you mow around.

Do you do grading and seeding for new construction?

Yes. Final grades, drainage, and lawn establishment on new builds is work we take on, and we have handled full backyard grade-and-seed jobs behind bigger projects.

Why does my yard hold water?

Northeast Ohio clay, usually, plus grading that sends water somewhere it should not go. Clay drains slowly, so the fix is moving the water: regrade the surface, bury drains, or carry it in a dry creek. The site visit tells us which your yard needs.

How much does yard drainage cost?

It depends on where the water comes from and how far it has to travel. A downspout extension is trivial; regrading a back yard with buried lines is a project. We price the fix after seeing where the water goes.

What towns do you cover for drainage and grading work?

The same circle as everything we build: Hudson, Streetsboro, Aurora, Mantua, Stow and the rest of the list on our service area page. We stay close to the Mantua yard so Marcus can be on every site.

Does drainage and grading work pair with anything else you build?

Usually. Most projects that include drainage and grading work also touch 24/7 snow & ice management, and designing the two together is cheaper and cleaner than bolting one on later.
